Learning Disabilities
This area will be devoted to an investigation of all the symptoms of
attention deficit disorder (ADD) that I, myself, exhibit and the ways in which they are reflected in the ways that  I write, draw, generate ideas, create my books and the very look and feel of this web site.

If you are interested in being enlightened as to the personal struggles that I have had to endure and, from time to time, conquer, bookmark this page and check back often.
If you would like to read the entire article on my personal struggles with ADD symptoms, you can download this article (299k).  This should  take less than a minute on a 56k connection.

"Squib was an unusually tiny owl who couldn't hoot or fly."

According to author and illustrator Larry Shles,
his first book could just as easily have begun like
this:

" Larry Shles was an unusually wheezy, sneezy, sick child
who struggled in school and got picked on by everyone. . . ."
When Shles, 54, attended elementary school at Laclede
School in St. Louis and Washington School in Normandy,
about the only way his teachers could describe his
problems was to say, "He's got ants in his pants."

Here's how Shles describes his difficulties;
"I remember looking at my classmates, sitting still and
reading at their desks and thinking, 'Either they're from
Mars or I am.' How could they do that? I felt like an alien.
"Whenever the teacher started talking, I began day-
dreaming. I couldn't pay attention, couldn't tend to the
spoken word, couldn't focus. My reading was poor; a book
without pictures was like a sudden weight upon me.

"I also had a complete inability to retain information. I
could take a test and do well. But 30 minutes later, if I had
to take the same test again, I wouldn't remember a thing.
"And I always felt like a social misfit."
